Goals for this lesson

Do you sometimes have to visit different shops to get everything you need? It can be a hassle, but it doesn&#8217;t have to be.
Nowadays, almost every shop has a website. Some shops, like Amazon and eBay, are only online. You can buy anything from groceries to books or even jewellery online and have it delivered to your home. The best part is you can shop from anywhere in the world!
Let&#8217;s get started!

Before we begin

But the experience of buying them can be very different. 
This is like shopping in real life - you don't spend as long buying broccoli in real life as you do when buying a car!

All can be bought online!

When shopping online, ask yourself “Who am I buying from?”
Shopping online safely is like shopping in real life – you go to a well-known supermarket, or a shop that’s nicely decorated. It is the same on the internet.
Here are some tips when shopping online:
<ul>
<li>Look for reputable websites by researching them.</li>
<li>It’s a good idea to ask family and friends about where they shop and why.</li>
<li>There are also online review sites like Trustpilot that people use to share their experiences of shopping with online sites.</li>
</ul>

Stay safe buying online

Shopping online is easy but ask yourself these questions to avoid complications;
<ul>
<li>Where in the world is the online shop located? 
If the site is outside the EU, you may be charged VAT or customs on top what you buy and the delivery charge. Look for an “About us” or “Contact” section on the website and see what country is listed in the company’s address.</li>
<li>What is the shop’s returns policy? 
Will they pay to have your item sent back, or do you have to pay? It’s a good idea to see if they have this information on their website, look for a “Returns FAQ” section. If not, see if they have a phone number on the website for you to call.</li>
</ul>

Where in the world?

If a website has ‘https’ at the start of the URL or a padlock symbol in the address bar, this means that you have a secure encrypted connection between your web browser and the website you are accessing. This means the website is safe! Of course, fraudsters can also design sites with ‘https’ that show a padlock, so do some further checks;
<ul>
<li>Typos in the address bar — Often hackers will use web addresses similar to the real shop/brand but will change some letters.</li>
<li>Search for the shop in Google and see if it shows the same website.</li>
<li>Your browser (e.g. Google or Safari) may alert you that a website is unsafe. Watch out for these warnings.</li>
<li>Check the contact information on the website. Does it have a physical address and phone number? Is there an email address and it have the company name in it, or is it generic (like a Gmail address)?</li>
<li>Does the website have typos or poor design? Does it have a poorly worded returns policy or no policy? These are all signs that the site may be a scam.</li>
</ul>

Look out for the lock!

<ul>
<li>Where the company of the online shop is, to know if you might face extra charges</li>
<li>The returns policy in case something isn&#8217;t right</li>
<li>When paying online, look for ‘https’ in the address bar and a padlock symbol</li>
<li>The design of the website, and whether there are typos or missing information</li>
</ul>

From this list, the four key things to look for before buying anything are:

Shopping on the internet is similar to shopping in real life, just on a computer:
<ol>
<li>On the internet, you search for the shop and visit the website.</li>
<li>Next, look for what you want. When you see something you want, put it in your basket.</li>
<li>Once you’ve got everything, you go to the checkout to pay. You’ll be asked for your address so they know where to send it.</li>
<li>Normally, people use their Visa or Mastercard to pay for online shopping. There are also other ways to pay.</li>
</ol>

Many shops let you create an account to remember your details, making checkout quicker. For this, you will need an email address and password.
The shop can save your address and payment details if you allow. If you shop frequently at this shop, it’s worth creating an account. 
Some shops let you checkout as a guest without saving your information, but you’ll need to provide your address for delivery.
Please note: Never give anyone your bank account number!

Online shop accounts

Search engines and websites remember your searches and activity using “cookies”. These are small files that record what you’re doing.
This is useful for looking up things again and for online shops to remember what products you viewed or added to your basket. They might show you ads for these products later.
When you visit a website that uses cookies, they must ask you to accept them. Some websites may not allow you to use the website until you do.

One of the main benefits of internet shopping is easily comparing products, prices and websites.
You can visit multiple websites at the same time by opening new tabs and comparing information across them.
Not only that but price comparison websites like <a href="https://bonkers.ie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bonkers.ie</a> and <a href="https://switcher.ie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">switcher.ie</a> can compare prices for you.

Searching for the best deal

Learn more about online shopping by trying it yourself. Visit an online shop, put things into the basket, go to checkout, then leave. This helps you understand how shopping online works.
Ask yourself those important questions to ensure the website is safe:
<ul>
<li>Look for trusted names and reviews.</li>
<li>Check the company’s location, delivery, and returns policy.</li>
<li>Padlock! (is there a locked padlock in the address bar?)</li>
</ul>

Shopping online is easier with the internet, but stay safe and pay attention where you shop. It’s like shopping in town, but you need to give your address for delivery. Cookies help you find things you might like based on what you look at online. Creating an account for an online shop can speed up checkout if you plan to return. You might even buy a present with your new skills!

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Bandwidth</dt><dd>The amount of data that can be transferred through your internet connection. If your bandwidth is low, webpages may load slowly, or you might have difficulty watching videos online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Bookmarks</dt><dd>Web addresses stored in your browser that you may want to use regularly. You can access your bookmarks easily. Bookmarks are also known as ‘favourites’.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Broadband</dt><dd>Broadband is a generic term for the connection which allows you to access the internet. To get broadband at home, you need to set up a contract with a broadband provider (such as Vodafone), who will charge you for the equipment needed to connect your smartphone, tablet or computer to the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Browser</dt><dd>A program that allows you to access the Internet. e.g. Chrome and Safari.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Chat</dt><dd>Taking part in an online chat for example on WhatsApp.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Click</dt><dd>To select something on your screen by moving your cursor over it and pressing your mouse button. On Smartphones and tablets you “tap” instead of “click”.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Contact Form</dt><dd>A form on a website that you can fill in to request information.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Contacts</dt><dd>Your contacts list is one of the most important things on your device. It&#8217;s where you save contact information for the people you know, including their names, phone numbers, and email addresses. A lot like an address book.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Cookies</dt><dd>A program that keeps track of what you do on the internet so that when you back to it another time, it will remember where you were or your preferences.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Cursor</dt><dd>The blinking line on the screen that indicates where you are.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Data allowance</dt><dd>Most phone and tablet contracts have monthly allowances for data usage. Data usage is measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). Your data allowance is used when you access the internet on your phone or tablet when you are not connected to Wi-Fi. Once you use up your allowance, you might get charged for additional usage, or you might not be able to use mobile data until your allowance renews the next month.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Download</dt><dd>To put something from the internet on your laptop or smartphone.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">E-mail</dt><dd>Text message that you send through an e-mail program.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">File</dt><dd>Data stored on a computer containing any sort of digital content such as a document with text, a picture, a piece of music or a film.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Forum</dt><dd>An online discussion group focused on a particular topic or theme, much like a chat room.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Google</dt><dd>Google is the most popular search engine on the internet. You can visit www.google.com and by typing in keywords you can search for information or a website. Someone might tell you to &#8216;google&#8217; something, which means to look up information online. There are also related services like Google Pay or Google Maps.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">History</dt><dd>Your internet browser will have an option marked ‘History’. If you click on it, you can see which sites have been viewed.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Homepage</dt><dd>The first page you see on a website. Usually a place that has general information on the site and some options or a menu taking you to other pages on the site.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Instagram</dt><dd>Instagram is a popular social media platform used for photo sharing. It allows you to create a personal profile where you can share photos with friends and family on your &#8216;Instagram feed&#8217;.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Internet</dt><dd>Network of millions of computers, spread all over the world.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Internet Banking</dt><dd>You use this if you want to do your banking online on the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">ios</dt><dd>The operating system used by apple across all Apple computers, phones and tablets.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">iTunes Store</dt><dd>Apple’s online store. The iTunes store has movies, music, videos and apps that can be purchased and downloaded to an Apple device or (with the exception of apps) be played on a PC using iTunes.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Keyboard</dt><dd>Consists of all the letters, numbers and characters you need to type.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Keyword</dt><dd>The word you enter into the search engine to search for information.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Laptop</dt><dd>A portable computer with a keyboard and a screen.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Link</dt><dd>A blue underlined word that you can click to go to another page.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Log in</dt><dd>If you have set up an online account for anything including email, banking, shopping, or social media, you will need to use a username (often your email address) and a password to access the account. This is known as logging in.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Menu</dt><dd>A list of options or a topics on a website to choose from.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Microsoft Edge</dt><dd>A Microsoft browser that has the same core features as other browsers for browsing the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Mouse</dt><dd>The controls of your computer, it allows you to click, scroll, check and drag.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Navigate</dt><dd>To move around or through a website.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Online</dt><dd>When you are connected to the internet, you are online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Online store</dt><dd>A store or shop on the Internet where you can buy products online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Operating system</dt><dd>The software that manages various programs on a computer, phone, or tablet. Examples include Android for certain smartphones (like Samsung, Google, Sony and Huawei) and iOS for Apple devices.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Password</dt><dd>Your secret access code. You don&#8217;t tell anyone your password.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PayPal</dt><dd>An online account that you link to your bank account or payment card which allows you to pay for online purchases securely without directly using your card details.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PC</dt><dd>Another name for computer, also laptop.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Phishing</dt><dd>Where criminals direct users to a fake website in order to trick them into disclosing private information, such as usernames or passwords or bank details.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PIN</dt><dd>A PIN acts like a password to protect your smartphone, usually required when you turn on you’re your smartphone.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Player</dt><dd>Player is an online video service from a broadcaster like RTÉ. Most TV channels have a player where you can view live or recorded shows.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Podcast</dt><dd>An ongoing series or episodes of a particular audio programme. Radio stations often have their shows available as a podcast.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Pop up</dt><dd>A window or small screen that pops up on top of the one you are already viewing, usually with advertising.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Post</dt><dd>To add a contribution to a forum/chat room/blog/web page. You can “post” an update to e.g. Facebook or look at other people’s posts.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Privacy</dt><dd>You decide for yourself what information you want to disclose about yourself.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Profile</dt><dd>A description that may include your personal details and is used to identify you on a social networking website. This can be set as public (viewed by everyone) or private (only viewed by certain people).
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Safari</dt><dd>Safari is Apple’s browser and is used on Apple devices like the iPhone or iPad to browse the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Screen</dt><dd>Your computer&#8217;s display.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Scroll</dt><dd>To move up, down our sideways around a page on a computer or other device.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Scroll bar</dt><dd>A narrow rectangle on the bottom or side of a screen that you can drag to scroll up / down or side to side.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Search bar</dt><dd>With Internet browsers, the search bar is the location within a browser that allows you to search the Internet for what you want to find.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Video calling</dt><dd>Calling someone while seeing and hearing each other on the screen.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Virtual</dt><dd>This is a common term on the internet. It means a simulation of the real thing. The internet itself is often seen as a virtual world where you make virtual friends and become a part of virtual communities.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Voice mail</dt><dd>Spoken message left by a caller on a voicemail system. You can set up voicemail on your smart phone. If you do not answer, the caller can leave you a message which you can listen to later.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Web address</dt><dd>The name of a website (same as URL).
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Website</dt><dd>A page of information, on the Internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Whatsapp</dt><dd>A program (app) on your phone to connect with others.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">YouTube</dt><dd>A website to watch and share videos.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Zoom</dt><dd>Zoom is a popular video communications platform for laptops, desktops and mobile devices. Alternatively, you can also “zoom in” or enlarge the text or images on a screen.

The course is split into three modules.  Each of these modules has a number of lessons covering specific topics as well as a summary lesson.

How much you cover at any one time is up to you. We suggest you allow up to an hour to complete a lesson.  However, there is no rule and you can spend as long as you like in any lesson.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is the purpose of the summary lesson? </h3>
 
The summary lesson captures the key points covered through the lessons and acts as a reminder before you move on to the next lesson.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can I do the lessons more than once? </h3>
 
Yes, you can do the lessons as often as you want.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How does my personal code work? </h3>
 
At the end of the Introduction, you will receive your own personal code. This code remembers where you finished the last time. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When you continue with the lesson at a later time, choose “continue with previous lesson”. Enter the code you received. The lesson starts where you left off.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What do the icons mean? </h3>
