Online banking is a safe and convenient way to manage your money.
In this lesson, we will cover how you can organise online banking, and get your bank&#8217;s mobile app to use your phone for banking.
Please note: Every bank will have a way for you to bank online. You may need to talk to your bank for specific instructions covering these steps.

Before we begin

That’s right, you use a PIN with your card at an ATM. The card is unique to you and the PIN is a secret number that only you should know. This means no one else can access your banking information. So, let’s see how that works with online banking.

You use a PIN with your card at an ATM. The card is unique to you and the PIN is a secret number that only you should know. This means no one else can access your banking information. So, let’s see how that works with online banking.

When the ATM first came in, you got a card and a PIN to use to do your banking at the machine. Now we have online banking, your bank will have a dedicated website or an app for your phone that you can use. In both these cases, you will have special security steps to take to register and keep you &#8211; and your money &#8211; safe.

To start banking online or on your phone, you first need to register.
Contact your bank for specific steps, but to give you an overview, you will need: Your bank account details to be able to prove your identity and to pick a personal identity number (PIN) &#8211; like the number you have for your ATM card.

Step 1

The first step to register for online banking is to call your bank, using the number for online accounts.
Several banks will also let you call into a branch for help, if you think you need it. The person helping you will outline the steps you need to take to get banking online for your account.
Have pen and paper handy, so you can take notes and write down important information.

To register for online banking:

<li>you’ll be asked to prove your identity</li>
<li>you’ll be given a registration ID number (different to your account number, so best to write it down)</li>
<li>you pick a personal code (this is like the PIN you have for the ATM)</li>

These steps add extra security to help protect you and your money.

Step 3

All banks have an app that lets you do your banking on your phone. Search the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for your bank.
Once downloaded, you are guided through putting in the online banking registration information.
You then use your PIN and/or registration ID to log into your bank&#8217;s app and see your account.
It is a good idea to log out of the app when you are finished using it.

Banks also have websites where you can log into your online banking.
When you use the bank&#8217;s online banking website, you&#8217;ll need to use your registration number and some numbers from your PIN.
Sometimes the bank will text to confirm it is you logging in.
As with your app &#8211; it&#8217;s a good idea to log out when you are finished!

Access your account online

With online banking, you can do nearly everything you can do in a branch &#8211; send money to others, organise direct debits or payments, check your balance and transactions and more.
In some cases you can even save money by using online banking services.
We&#8217;ll learn more about these services in later lessons.

Activity

You use a personal code to access your online banking. This keeps you safe, as only you should know your secret code. Your bank will let you create your own secret code. Remember to make it something you will remember – but also something someone else cannot easily guess.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Account</dt><dd>A profile that you create on a particular website or program that contains information you have provided such as name and email address.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Android</dt><dd>A mobile operating system developed by Google for use by many smartphone brands including Samsung, Nokia and Huawei.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">App</dt><dd>A program that you can put on your smartphone which is accessed via a square image on the screen. 
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">App Store</dt><dd>The place on your smartphone where you can choose apps, sometimes you need to buy them.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Apple ID</dt><dd>An Apple ID is an account used to make purchases from the Apple Store. Also used to access other apple services. It is used for purchasing or downloading apps for Apple devices like iPad and iPhone.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Attachment</dt><dd>Files, such as photos, documents, or programs, which are sent along with an email.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Bandwidth</dt><dd>The amount of data that can be transferred through your internet connection. If your bandwidth is low, webpages may load slowly, or you might have difficulty watching videos online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Bookmarks</dt><dd>Web addresses stored in your browser that you may want to use regularly. You can access your bookmarks easily. Bookmarks are also known as ‘favourites’.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Broadband</dt><dd>Broadband is a generic term for the connection which allows you to access the internet. To get broadband at home, you need to set up a contract with a broadband provider (such as Vodafone), who will charge you for the equipment needed to connect your smartphone, tablet or computer to the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Browser</dt><dd>A program that allows you to access the Internet. e.g. Chrome and Safari.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Chat</dt><dd>Taking part in an online chat for example on WhatsApp.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Contacts</dt><dd>Your contacts list is one of the most important things on your device. It&#8217;s where you save contact information for the people you know, including their names, phone numbers, and email addresses. A lot like an address book.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Data allowance</dt><dd>Most phone and tablet contracts have monthly allowances for data usage. Data usage is measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). Your data allowance is used when you access the internet on your phone or tablet when you are not connected to Wi-Fi. Once you use up your allowance, you might get charged for additional usage, or you might not be able to use mobile data until your allowance renews the next month.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">E-mail</dt><dd>Text message that you send through an e-mail program.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">File</dt><dd>Data stored on a computer containing any sort of digital content such as a document with text, a picture, a piece of music or a film.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Google</dt><dd>Google is the most popular search engine on the internet. You can visit www.google.com and by typing in keywords you can search for information or a website. Someone might tell you to &#8216;google&#8217; something, which means to look up information online. There are also related services like Google Pay or Google Maps.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">History</dt><dd>Your internet browser will have an option marked ‘History’. If you click on it, you can see which sites have been viewed.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Homepage</dt><dd>The first page you see on a website. Usually a place that has general information on the site and some options or a menu taking you to other pages on the site.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Instagram</dt><dd>Instagram is a popular social media platform used for photo sharing. It allows you to create a personal profile where you can share photos with friends and family on your &#8216;Instagram feed&#8217;.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Internet Banking</dt><dd>You use this if you want to do your banking online on the internet.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">iTunes Store</dt><dd>Apple’s online store. The iTunes store has movies, music, videos and apps that can be purchased and downloaded to an Apple device or (with the exception of apps) be played on a PC using iTunes.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Keyboard</dt><dd>Consists of all the letters, numbers and characters you need to type.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Keyword</dt><dd>The word you enter into the search engine to search for information.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Laptop</dt><dd>A portable computer with a keyboard and a screen.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Link</dt><dd>A blue underlined word that you can click to go to another page.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Log in</dt><dd>If you have set up an online account for anything including email, banking, shopping, or social media, you will need to use a username (often your email address) and a password to access the account. This is known as logging in.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Menu</dt><dd>A list of options or a topics on a website to choose from.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Microsoft Edge</dt><dd>A Microsoft browser that has the same core features as other browsers for browsing the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Mouse</dt><dd>The controls of your computer, it allows you to click, scroll, check and drag.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Navigate</dt><dd>To move around or through a website.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Online</dt><dd>When you are connected to the internet, you are online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Online store</dt><dd>A store or shop on the Internet where you can buy products online.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Operating system</dt><dd>The software that manages various programs on a computer, phone, or tablet. Examples include Android for certain smartphones (like Samsung, Google, Sony and Huawei) and iOS for Apple devices.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Password</dt><dd>Your secret access code. You don&#8217;t tell anyone your password.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PayPal</dt><dd>An online account that you link to your bank account or payment card which allows you to pay for online purchases securely without directly using your card details.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PC</dt><dd>Another name for computer, also laptop.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Phishing</dt><dd>Where criminals direct users to a fake website in order to trick them into disclosing private information, such as usernames or passwords or bank details.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">PIN</dt><dd>A PIN acts like a password to protect your smartphone, usually required when you turn on you’re your smartphone.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Player</dt><dd>Player is an online video service from a broadcaster like RTÉ. Most TV channels have a player where you can view live or recorded shows.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Podcast</dt><dd>An ongoing series or episodes of a particular audio programme. Radio stations often have their shows available as a podcast.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Pop up</dt><dd>A window or small screen that pops up on top of the one you are already viewing, usually with advertising.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Post</dt><dd>To add a contribution to a forum/chat room/blog/web page. You can “post” an update to e.g. Facebook or look at other people’s posts.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Privacy</dt><dd>You decide for yourself what information you want to disclose about yourself.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Profile</dt><dd>A description that may include your personal details and is used to identify you on a social networking website. This can be set as public (viewed by everyone) or private (only viewed by certain people).
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Safari</dt><dd>Safari is Apple’s browser and is used on Apple devices like the iPhone or iPad to browse the internet.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Screen</dt><dd>Your computer&#8217;s display.

</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Scroll bar</dt><dd>A narrow rectangle on the bottom or side of a screen that you can drag to scroll up / down or side to side.
</dd><dt class="word-list__item">Search bar</dt><dd>With Internet browsers, the search bar is the location within a browser that allows you to search the Internet for what you want to find.

How much you cover at any one time is up to you. We suggest you allow up to an hour to complete a lesson.  However, there is no rule and you can spend as long as you like in any lesson.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is the purpose of the summary lesson? </h3>
 
The summary lesson captures the key points covered through the lessons and acts as a reminder before you move on to the next lesson.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can I do the lessons more than once? </h3>
 
Yes, you can do the lessons as often as you want.
 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How does my personal code work? </h3>
 
At the end of the Introduction, you will receive your own personal code. This code remembers where you finished the last time. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When you continue with the lesson at a later time, choose “continue with previous lesson”. Enter the code you received. The lesson starts where you left off.

You can do so much with online banking, checking your accounts statements, transferring money, check your balance, make a payment and manage your debit and credit card. We will also cover your safety and keeping your money secure.
